Tuoba Yan is the Mounted Regular Attendant of Fu Jian, and appeared to have been under his care for some time. He first met Chen Xing and Xiang Shu in the Yuwen Residence in Chang'an, and fell for the former at first sight.

Personality[]

Tuoba Yan is known for being a kind-hearted, sweet man with a deep sense of righteousness he stands firmly by. Despite his high military position and prowess, he goes out of his way to help people when called for and he isn't afraid to risk himself for a greater cause. He also has much softer side, as he firmly believes in love at first sight and is not afraid to show his true feelings and vulnerability, making him an understanding and compassionate person in par with his caring and good-nature character.

Appearance[]

Tuoba Yan is described as a handsome man with a great figure, and as a Mounted Regular Attendant, he wears dark red martial robes and carries with him a foot-long crescent shaped wolf fang dagger. [1] According to Chen Xing's first impression, this makes him look heroic and with a sense of self-discipline.

Background[]

Tuoba Yan is of the Xianbei tribe and he's the affectionately called 'cousin' by the consort of the emperor, Princess Qinghe. He was under the care of Fu Jian and his military prowess helped him get to where he is at the start of the novel.

Chen Xing[]

Tuoba Yan fell for Chen Xing at first sight in the first timeline, to the point where Fu Jian also attempted to matchmake them, but Chen Xing turned him down at Chi Le Chuan. They remained on good terms, even becoming good friends on the second timeline.

Xiang Shu[]

Given that he is in love with Xiang Shu's darling (Chen Xing) he constantly likes to chug his vinegar. There's a lot of tension between the two of them, coming from Xiang Shu's part mostly.

Fu Jian[]

Feeling indebted to Fu Jian, Tuoba Yan is exceedingly loyal to him, even after Fu Jian grew increasingly mad. Despite the fact that the man had stopped caring for his wellbeing, Tuoba Yan still refused to go against him, until that stance is no longer tenable.

Princess Qinghe[]

Princess Qinghe is shown to be like a sister to Tuoba Yan. She calls him her cousin and she also tried to help matchmake him with Chen Xing at first when she noticed his infatuation.

Lu Ying[]

In the second lifetime, Tuoba Yan developed a crush on Lu Ying at first sight, much to Xiao Shan's chagrin.

Xiao Shan[]

Although starting on rocky terms during the second timeline, the two of them become 'bros' after getting past Xiao Shan's annoyance with the love he has for Lu Ying.

Che Luofeng[]

Due to Tuoba Yan's Xianbei Origin, Che Luofeng has an ongoing feud with him out of his resentment. The latter wants to get revenge for his own Ruoran tribe as he believes people from the Xianbei tribe should pay for their crimes against his tribe. He even goes as far as wanting to pursue Tuoba Yan to kill him on his incognito visit to Chi Le Chuan in the Mid-Autumn festival only to be stopped by Xiang Shu.

  • He's a firm believer on love at first sight, falling in love with Chen Xing on the first timeline and Lu Ying in the second.
  • He had gifted Chen Xing his family ring after their first meeting, which the latter later returns after rejecting his feelings.
